Lifeguard training

 

The following courses are a current list of those that can be offered by Surfseekers at the present time.  They are all endorsed by the Royal Life Saving Society UK and as such are recognised throughout the leisure and outdoor industry as accepted and relevant vocational qualifications.

Courses will be located at venues within North Devon with theory sessions taking place at North Devon College or our training centre in Ilfracombe.  Pool training will be at North Devon Leisure Centre and all open water sessions will take place at a variety of appropriate beach and river locations most suited to the prevailing environmental conditions.

We have found these courses to be of particular interest to teachers, care professionals, outdoor instructors, youth leaders, students or anyone responsible for supervising young people in an outdoor or aquatic environment.  Applications from groups are especially welcome.

RLSS Open Water Rescue Courses

National Beach Lifeguard Qualification
Outline

Professional qualification, involving the achievement of a strong level of open water competence and first aid skills. Minimum required for employment as a beach lifeguard and also an excellent qualification to have for current or prospective,  outdoor pursuits instructors or supervisors in a water based environment.

Course duration 33 hours + assessment
Pre-requites At least 16 years old good swimming ability and physically fit.
Validity 24 months from date of assessment

Assistant Beach Lifesaver Award
Outline

This award is for younger people or those who are aiming to be beach lifeguards and offers introductory training in the skills and knowledge required for beach life guarding. The course is designed to train and assess competencies in the following areas:

Fitness, knowledge and self discipline, the ability to give first aid, teamwork and public relations, the ability to observe a beach area and notify a life guard of emergency situations, to take directions from a lifeguard and assist in the response to emergency situations and to prepare the candidate for a full lifeguard qualification.

Course duration 30 hours + assessment
Pre-requites

At least 12 years of age, physically fit with good eyesight and hearing

Validity

24 months from the date from successful completion of `open water` section assessment

National Pool Lifeguard Award
Outline

Professional qualification focussing on rescue techniques, first aid skills and incident management in the swimming pool environment. Minimum required for employment in pools both nationally and internationally. Excellent qualification to have for students doing part time and seasonal work, summer camps, BUNACAMP, gap years, etc.

Course duration 30 hours + assessment

Emergency Response (open water)
Outline

A training programme covering basic skills to assess competence in safe `land based` rescue techniques and rescue aids. It is designed for those working in an open space adjacent to water including park wardens, rangers etc.

Course duration 8 hours + assessment
Pre-requites

The certificate is available to all candidates of 16 years of age or over and may be attempted by non-swimmers.

Aquatic Rescue Test for Outdoor Activity Supervisors Award
Outline

 This is a test of competence in accident prevention, water rescue and life support for those supervising others at recognised sites used for activities on, in or near open water.

It is designed to assess the candidate’s knowledge of the principles of rescue, resuscitation and aftercare. Candidates must also perform swimming and towing rescues in the open water areas at the site where the activities take place, demonstrate a range of basic life support skills and show an understanding of the written NOP`s and EAP`s for each site.

Course duration Minimum 12 hours+ assessment (more if a variety of sites used to widen the scope of the qualification)
Pre-requites

Candidates must be 18 years of age or over on the date of assessment and hold current RLSS Life Support 2 or higher award (e.g. First Aid at Work)

Validity 24 months from date of assessment

The test conforms to the provisions contained in Outdoor Adventure Activity Providers: Code of Practice.

The test is not a recognised lifeguard qualification.

Exemptions

Some courses may carry a variety of exemptions to certain modules if another recognised qualification is held. For example a current First Aid at Work Certificate will allow the candidate to be exempt from certain aspects of Aquatic Rescue Test and NBLQ. However evidence of these existing qualifications will be required in order for the candidate to qualify for exemption.
